The point gap setting has a huge effect on timing so it needs to be pretty much dead on correct.

When, I bring mine up on #1 TDC Compression, and since I still have the timing gear cover off, I'm seeing my gear marks (crank & cam) 180 out instead of aligned next to each other.
Jan 25, 2017 · I have set the electronic ignition static timing with the engine off just like you do with a points plate but if you set it on the 2000 rpm advance mark with the engine stopped you will have problems so its safer for a beginner to just dodge a little blow by oil & set it with a timing light.
